‘COVID-19 affected mental health education, research’

The chief executive officer of Leadway Health, Mr Tokunbo Alli, has lamented the impact of COVID-19 on mental health, saying the pandemic has been an unprecedented challenge for health care provision.

Alli, in a statement, said the COVID-19 restrictions had affected the lifestyle of people across the world.

“There are restrictions and measures put in place by various nations to curtail the spread of this deadly pandemic and to safeguard human existence from the claws of the killer disease. While people are forced to re-strategise on how best to live their life, the daily rates of people infected with the disease amid the outbreak, the virulent new variant strains have put health service delivery of nations of the world under intense pressure. The outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic has been an unprecedented challenge for health care provision.

“Simply surviving this experience can make a person more likely to later develop post-traumatic stress syndrome, depression and anxiety. There have been increased levels of relapse in people with pre-existing mental health conditions, while there are increased mental health problems in people with no previous mental health disorders. This has been compounded by decreased or variable access to health care services, 24-hour care and daycare services.

“No wonder Andrew Byrne in an article titled ‘Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic – a mental health service perspective,’ wrote that ‘The pandemic negatively impacted on mental health education, research and training, all embedded in mental health services.’ Due to a multitude of factors, the COVID-19 pandemic has been noted to disproportionately affect those with existing mental health disorders,” Alli said.

The CEO of the health management organisation added that Leadway Health had assembled a team of health care administrators from the health insurance industry.

He said, “These set of individuals have a complete understanding of customer journey, excellent patient experience, delivering superior service, empathy and overall patient satisfaction. This is the driving force behind the Leadway Health value proposition.

“We are an innovative HMO dedicated to providing top-notch health insurance solutions that cater to the people’s entire well-being, helping Nigerians to save time and money to get rid of the hassles that make health insurance so hard to navigate.”
