‘Nigeria needs specialised centre to treat burns victims’

The Senator representing Ogun West Senatorial District in the National Assembly,  Tolu Odebiyi on Tuesday,  called for the need to establish a specialised centre for the treatment of victims of burns accidents.

He said incidents of burns continued to be a global challenge. Annually, they cause over 265,000 deaths.

Odebiyi said this in Abuja at the one-day public hearing organised by the senate committee on health (secondary and tertiary) to consider one of the Bills he sponsored on National Burns and rehabilitation centre, Ilaro, Ogun State.

According to him, burns is the fourth most common type of trauma worldwide, following traffic accidents, falls and interpersonal violence.

He said, “Further to this and beyond giving the procedural first aid to victims of burns, the nation needs a specialised centre for the treatment of victims from burns accidents. Nigeria needs to follow global best practices in catering for these health emergencies that can obviously be managed through the establishment of a centre, which this bill seeks to provide”.

He said the bill seek to replicate the establishment of an institution, dedicated only to the treatment and rehabilitation of burns victims, for Nigeria, and by extension for Africa.
