Foundation hopes to raise Nigerians’ life expectancy to 70 years

A non-governmental organisation, Doctors Save A Life Foundation, has said the 54-year life expectancy for the average Nigerian is unacceptable.

The President of the foundation, Dr Richard Okoye, said this during the unveiling of a medical app called, Doctors Save A Life Foundation, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Saturday.

Okoye said that during a conference in the United States, the analysis of life expectancy for all countries of the word was conducted and Nigeria’s was put at 55 years.

He added that the life expectancy of Nigerians had further reduced to 54 years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other issues, but predicted a 70-year life expectancy for the citizens by 2025.

Okoye stated, “We had a conference in Los Angeles, United States, a couple of years ago and there we analysed the life expectancy of countries all over the world. I saw Nigeria seated among the third world countries with a life expectancy of 55 years then.

“Unfortunately, we are having 54 years today following COVID-19 and some of these unfortunate issues in the country. That became a burden to me.

Okoye continued, “How could a country of our status be recording such a deplorable, completely unacceptable life expectancy? So, I was able to have an understanding of the reasons why we are having the problem beyond what people do see.

“That is why we came up with a vision that by the year 2025, Nigeria life expectancy will move from the current state of 54 years to 70 years; it seems exaggerated, but it is achievable.”

Okoye identified lack of health information as the major cause of the healthcare crisis in the country, saying, “The healthcare crisis in Nigeria is beyond just the issue of infrastructure and all that. It is principally because of health information. God gave us an insight and say decode this medical information in a common man’s language that by so doing will save millions of them. That is why we now came to put up this app called Dr Save a Life together; it is your doctor where there is none.”

He added that the app was developed by Medi-Soft Limited, a United States-based software company, where he is the chief executive officer.
