Pension Credit rates to rise this year but millions will miss out – are you eligible? | Personal Finance | Finance

Pension Credit payments will be rising by 3.1 percent from April 2022. From April, weekly payments will be topped up to £182.60 for single claimants, with those in couples seeing increases to £278.70.

“Anyone who feels they may qualify for Pension Credit should contact DWP. Even if you have been refused in the past a change in circumstances may mean you now qualify so it’s worth checking.”

To be eligible for Pension Credit, claimants must be living in England, Scotland or Wales and have reached state pension age.

Claimants who have a partner must also include their details within the application.

Applicants will be eligible if either they and their partner have both reached state pension age or, one of them is getting Housing Benefit for people over state pension age.

A partner can be a husband, wife, civil partner or someone they live with as a couple.

When a person applies for Pension Credit, their income is calculated.

If they have a partner, their income will be calculated together.

Currently, Pension Credit will top up weekly income to 177.10 for single claimants, or £270.30 for partners.

If a claimants income is higher than these levels, they may still be able to get Pension Credit if they have a disability, care for someone, have savings or specific housing costs.

Claims for Pension Credit can be made up to four months before a person reaches their state pension age.

They can also apply at any point after they reach their state pension age but applications can only be backdated by up to three months.

When applying claimants will need to provide details on their National Insurance number(s), information on their income levels and outgoings.

Applications are made online through the Government’s website, by phone or through the post.
